Zephaniah 1:8 "On that Day of Judgement," says YHWH, "I will punish the leaders and princes of Judah and all those following pagan customs."
Zephaniah lived during the 7th Century BC and was a contemporary of Jeremiah although Zephaniah spent the majority of his time in Jerusalem. Under the rule of the previous Kings of Judah, the worship of Baal and Astarte was brought into the city walls. This began to change the cultural and spiritual norm of Jerusalem because with the worship of these pagan gods came the different nuances of clothing, mannerism, and morals. In a short amount of time, these practices made their way into The Temple!
King Josiah wanted to put a stop to everything that had taken root because of the disobedience of the two previous kings to The Commandments of YHWH. Zephaniah was zealous for The Temple and for purging Jerusalem of all the pagan influences. There is nothing new under the sun as we see the same method of operation taking place in our country today. The picture on the right is the temple of Ba'al in Palmyra, Syria which was destroyed by ISIS in 2015. This archway linked the main street of the ancient Palmyra Colonnade and the Temple of Bel which is why some call it the Archway of Baal. As a tribute to this fallen temple, two 50ft reproductions of the Arches of Baal were brought to New York, London and even Washington D.C.
We can see the same behavior of 2000 years ago playing out once again as if it were on cue to some tremendous cosmic script. Although that sounds fanciful, the reality is there is a spiritual war taking place and ground is being lost or gained. The worship of Baal in the ancient Middle East would have been something like this. Parents would bring their first born child to the altar where they would then throw the baby into the fire as an offering.
This was part of the "payment" required for the now childless parent to participate in the culmination of the sacrificial ritual. As the baby is screaming and being burned alive men and women alike would be taking part in a mass, bisexual orgy. Baal worshippers believed that this would ensure financial blessing as well as a blessing of rain and harvest to "mother earth."
Could there be a connection with these gates and what we are seeing happening through national legislation in these places? The Baal spirit is a principality which means it exerts influence through spiritual authority over states and operates through the local government. We must pray fervently that these spiritual gateways be shut!
Zephaniah's warning about participating in pagan customs and traditions should be loud and clear. Why? Because of all the non-biblical, pagan traditions we see being celebrated and implemented into the church that is rooted in Baal worship. Not only that, but he is prophesying about The Day when we will stand before The Righteous Judge on the appointed time of Yom Kippur. Aka Judgement Day is known biblically as The Day of Atonement. The word Kippur comes from the same root word as Kippa which means a covering. So this is also the Day of Covering for those who have the Blood of the Lamb on the doorposts of their hearts.
Some translation of Zephaniah 1:8 say, "wearing strange clothing" which was an expression used to describe a person who started observing pagan traditions. Isn't it interesting that we have spiritual clothing and armor that we are given according to Scripture? Does this answer the reason why the person wearing the wrong clothing was kicked out of the Wedding Feast?
Mathew 22:12 He asked, 'How did you get in here without wedding clothes, friend?' The man was speechless
Our outward expression is a result of our inward impression. We must ask ourselves, is there no Fear of YHWH when taking part in ways and traditions that are contrary to what The Creator has given us in His instructions for being set-apart? Being set-apart is to be in the world but not of it. Examine your heart and make a righteous judgment based on His Word and not your emotions. Is your heart deceitful above all things or does Creator sit on the throne of your heart? Repent and don't go back to worthless traditions of men that are taught as doctrine. If He sits on the throne of your heart then Shema (Hear/Obey) and you will find the freedom that is promised.
1 John 5:3 "For this is the love of The Creator: that we be keeping His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome."
