When the Bishop is a Pawn

Updated: Jul 19, 2019

Pastor Andrew Brunson isn't exactly a bishop. But he is definitely being used as a pawn. He's an American pastor who has been serving the people in Turkey for 23 years. Being the daughter of missionaries, his plight hits a little close to home. Had we been in Turkey instead of the Marshall Islands, that could have been my father.

Pastor Andrew Brunson has been imprisoned now for nearly two years. Why was he arrested? Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is attempting to use him for prisoner exchange with the U.S. He has a vendetta to settle with Muhammed Fethullah Gülen, his political nemesis who he suspected for bringing about a widespread corruption investigation upon his cabinet. Gülen is enjoying political asylum here in the U.S., which will not allow Turkey to extradite him.

I know this is "old news." It happened two years ago. But he's still sitting in a Turkish prison and this news needs to stay fresh in our minds and prayers until he is safely home with his family.

What can you do?

1. Pray! Add his safety and release from prison to your prayer list.

2. Sign the petition. Here's a link.
