On the Quest for the Herbal Holy Grail

Updated: Jul 19, 2019

Ancient mortar & pestle

The Balm of Gilead: Yes, the Holy Grail of the Herbal World... What herbalist doesn't long to know the secret recipe of ancient times? The highly guarded recipe of the Balm of Gilead was so top secret that in Biblical times, those who were given the honor of preparing it actually took an oath that they would never reveal the clandestine, mysterious way of The Balm to a Gentile.

There are many thoughts on the secret salve. It is a combination of certain herbs (The Colonel's Kentucky Fried has nothing on this)? A a single plant? Or is the value is in the preparation process and not the herb, itself? Theories abound.

As a Master Herbalist, there are three Biblical herbals that are like the siren's call to me:

  1. The Balm of Gilead

  2. Biblical hyssop

  3. The Temple Incense

“Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there? Why then is there no healing for the wound of my people?”

~ Jeremiah 8:22

"Go up to Gilead and obtain balm, O virgin daughter of Egypt!"

~ Jeremiah 46:11a

The Balm of Gilead has been famous for its healing properties for millennia. I have begun my quest for the secrets of The Balm. Join me in prayer for revelation, discovery, and insight into this ancient medicine!

What are YOUR thoughts? Do you have any musings on the Balm of Gilead? Any leading suspect plants pop to mind? Do you think it's a single plant or a combination?
