Meadows to Medicine: Learning from the Land and Carrying the Knowledge Forward

There is something powerful about gathering in nature with open minds, willing hands, and a shared desire to learn.
Our recent Meadows to Medicine class brought together an inspiring group of “Medicine Makers” to explore the wisdom, beauty, and practical knowledge found in the natural world the Creator has made. Together, we slowed down, observed the land, and began looking more closely at the plants growing in our meadows, forests, gardens, and backyards.
The class offered more than information—it was an invitation to reconnect with Creation.
A Day of Discovery
Throughout the class, participants learned about plants and their traditional uses while exploring important practices such as responsible harvesting, safe preparation, and proper plant identification.
One of the greatest joys of teaching Meadows to Medicine is watching people develop a deeper appreciation for the plants growing right outside their doors. When we take the time to observe, listen, and learn, an ordinary meadow, forest, or garden can become a living classroom.
We hope everyone left feeling inspired, encouraged, and better equipped to continue their herbal journey.
“We all picked jewelweed, but the true jewels in the class were the students.”—Dr. Laralyn RiverWind
Herbal Knowledge Is a Lifelong Journey

Herbalism is not something we master in a single class. It is a lifelong journey shaped by observation, study, experience, and responsible practice. Traditional knowledge carries great responsibility. It should always be approached with humility, respect, and care.
We encourage every student to keep learning, ask questions, verify plant identification, and carefully research safe preparation before using any plant.
Products and tools can support this process, but the most important resource will always be the knowledge you develop through direct experience and thoughtful study.
Resources for Continuing the Journey
For those who would like to build upon what they learned, we have gathered several recommended books and practical tools.
Field Guides and Herbal Books
Preparation and Infusion Tools
Harvesting and Storage Tools
These tools are simply aids to learning. No product can replace careful observation, reliable research, mentorship, and responsible hands-on practice.
Keep Growing
The end of the class is only the beginning.
Start a small herb garden. Carry a field journal on your walks. Learn to identify plants native to your area. Research their history and traditional uses. Spend time outside with your family, and help the next generation recognize and respect the natural world.
Passing this knowledge from generation to generation is one of the most important purposes of Meadows to Medicine.
“One generation commends your works to another; they tell of your mighty acts.”—Psalm 145:4
The knowledge of our ancestors was not meant to remain only in books. It was meant to be lived, practiced, shared, and carried forward—with wisdom and responsibility.
Thank You to Our Medicine Makers
To everyone who joined us: thank you.

Your participation, thoughtful questions, enthusiasm, and fellowship made Meadows to Medicine a truly special gathering. It was a blessing to spend this time with you, and we look forward to seeing you again at another class, gathering, or around the council fire.
You can also support the continued work of FireKeepers International through our Giving Back campaign or sponsor a future student. Donations may be tax-deductible.
Until we gather again, may the Creator bless your journey, deepen your understanding, and continue to reveal the medicines, lessons, and beauty surrounding you every day.
With gratitude and blessings,
The RiverWinds
